The Greek word “temenos” refers to a safe, protected space in which to heal. The mission of Temenos CDC residences in Houston is to provide a safe haven where all people are loved and accepted and where mental work can take place. Temenos was created to provide affordable, permanent supportive housing for individuals living in critical poverty by housing as many people as possible in order to give them a fighting chance at a decent living environment. Following the devastation wrought by Hurricane Katrina, Temenos has built three apartment buildings in Houston neighborhoods that are undergoing significant revitalization, helping to alleviate the challenges of homelessness.

CEO Eva Thibaudeau had heard about YPTC for years on NPR radio stations and in a previous job had engaged them for some desperately needed financial and accounting help. “I brought them in and it was really positive,” she recalls. “When I came into the CEO position at Temenos CDC we had no finance or accounting staff and were really in a tough position with our books. I didn’t have the financial resources to be able to hire someone inside who would have all the various levels of expertise that we would need,” she adds.

“I turned to YPTC and they have truly been a game changer for our relatively small nonprofit. To have all of their expertise from the controller level to staff accountant, and then having access to the breadth of support and knowledge from all the other nonprofits they work with, has been incredible.”

Thibaudeau is the first to admit that finance and accounting are not her strong points. “I can run nonprofits until the day is long but I’m not a CPA,” she says. “So I love YPTC – they’re my lifeline! They’ve saved us a lot of money by helping us streamline many processes. It’s made our business better.”
