"Extensions of our own team"

NewSchools is a venture philanthropy in California that builds a better education system by connecting people, resources, and ideas. The organization invests in the ideas and energy of education leaders and entrepreneurs who are advancing innovative solutions and creating new possibilities for all students.

Shelley Hughes, Finance Director, explains that NewSchools was previously experiencing a transition on their finance team requiring additional capacity, and although initially hired YPTC as a short-term solution, “has found success with YPTC as a long-term partnership.”

“As our internal team has continued to shift during the course of the partnership, we’ve found YPTC can always help us fill any holes in capacity: from a Finance Director’s maternity leave to a removed coordinator position on our separate but highly intertwined operations team,” Shelley explains.

Shelley expresses a high level of trust in saying, “I know I can rely on our financial and accounting data and that key processes will be done on time and accurately. I also appreciate our access to the broader team and resources at YPTC for the times when we have a new or unusual accounting question. We can rely on the impressive experience and expertise of the YPTC Team.”

She feels that the accountants at YPTC are highly experienced and professional, “They feel like extensions of our own team and dependable for any routine and one-off tasks. They also fit right into our team in terms of culture and personality.”

She calls out Steven Riggs, YPTC Associate, “[He] has a tremendous impact on our organization. He is a star on our team, performing all aspects of his role phenomenally well which provides leverage to me in my role. He proactively looks out for us and makes sure we are aware of places we can be better stewards of capital.”
