Staying Afloat: Arts & Culture Series 1. Getting Ready for the Shuttered Venue Operators Grant

In this first installment of YPTC’s Staying Afloat: Arts & Culture Series, Justine Townsend covers 3 things you can do today to ensure that you are ready to apply for an SVO grant.

Shuttered venues were originally ineligible from applying for an SVO grant if they had applied for a Paycheck Protection Program (PPP) loan on or after 12/27/20. This meant that struggling venues were forced to choose between the two pandemic funding opportunities. However, the recent American Rescue Plan Act removed this restriction and now opens the opportunity for organizations to apply for both! If you did not apply for a PPP loan because of the previous restriction, now’s the time – apply before 3/31/2021. That is the current deadline for PPP loan applications!

The three steps you can take now include:

Prep Step 1: Go to SBA.gov and check your organization’s eligibility

  • Must have been in operations as of 2/29/2020
  • Must have suffered an earned revenue loss of 25% or greater between one quarter in 2019 and the same quarter in 2020
  • Live venue operators or promoters, theatrical producers, live performing arts organizations, relevant museum operators, some zoos and aquariums, and more

Prep Step 2: You MUST obtain a D-U-N-S number for your organization at https://fedgov.dnb.com/webform/

  • Search for your organization to determine whether you already have a D-U-N-S number.
  • If you do not have a number, you will be guided through the application process on the Dun & Bradstreet website.

Prep Step 3: You MUST register your entity on SAM.gov

  • Create a SAM.gov user account
  • Register your entity after creating the SAM.gov user account
  • Then you can do a public search for previous registration or exclusion records
