Matthew Wright shares his inspiring journey from his first job in food service to becoming a manager at YPTC in Washington, DC. He discusses his passion for leadership, his experience in nonprofit accounting, and the supportive culture at YPTC. Matthew also reflects on the challenges and rewards of his work, the importance of teamwork, and his excitement for the future impact YPTC can have on the nonprofit community and the next generation.

Q&A: Matthew Wright on Leadership, YPTC, and Building a Better Future
 

Q: What did your early career journey look like?
A: I had a lot of aspirations when I was growing up, and my first job was actually in food service at a retirement community. I was a place where I learned to serve, and it was where I realized that I had a desire to lead and to really enact change in my corner of the world. I really enjoyed creating an environment that people wanted to be a part of. So it didn’t necessarily matter what skill or discipline that I was in, It just matter that where I was was able to help people. And I just so happen to have interest in business and in numbers.

 

Q: What made you pursue a role at YPTC?

A: During college, I was doing some bookkeeping for my church, for some nonprofits as well as some small businesses as well. And I was eager to learn. And I really fell in love with the accounting and the nonprofit side of business. And so I actually ended up being on the client side of YPTC when I first, yeah, started my career. And so I was impressed with the level of care and support that YPTC had provided for me. So I really wanted to be a part of that. And so that’s how I ended up here.

 

Q: What is most rewarding about working at YPTC?

A: I’ve come across really messy scenarios and it’s a daily grind that requires steadfastness and you have to keep that vision of the end goal in mind. But when that culminates in the client saying I don’t know where we would be without YPTC, it’s like taking a really difficult hike to the top of the mountain and years really get to enjoy the beautiful view. And so that’s what it’s felt like being here at YPTC.

 

Q: What do you enjoy most about YPTC’s culture? 

A: Our culture of support has always been the backbone of our success. We’ve created a culture where we don’t have to know all the answers and that we’re encouraged to ask for help when we need it. There’s an old proverb that I love. It says if you want to go fast, go alone, but if you want to go far, you go together. And the fact that we go together here at YPTC has really positively impact my working environment and just made my life that much better.

 

Q: What excites you most about a future at YPTC?

A: I’m a father, and so I think a lot about what does the future look like for my children. And I’m excited about the new opportunities to invest in the future of the world that my kids are going to grow up in. And seeing YPTC grow so rapidly and seeing all the new opportunities in ways that we can help the nonprofit community at large, that excites me to see how can we invest in a better future.
